Choosing the Right Steel for Precision Dies

I’ve been working on a new set of dies for a stamping project and I’m debating between using D2 or O1 tool steel — i’ve read that D2 holds its edge longer but is harder to work with. Has anyone had experience with these materials? I’m looking for insights on edge retention vs. ease of machining, especially for tight tolerances.

I’ve worked with both, and while D2 does hold an edge better, it can be a pain to machine. I found that using carbide tools really helps when working it for tight tolerances. Have you tried any specific tooling for either steel?
