I’ve had better consistency on “torque-plate” finishes by torquing with the exact fasteners and lubricant from the job and recording clamp load with a bolt stretch gauge, not just torque. When we ballize 4140, I chill the balls and use a light ATF film; it drops push force and keeps the bore rounder — just note springback can leave you about 0.0002" small.
I’ve had the best luck getting folks defense-ready by having each operator complete a mini AS9102 Form 3 on the first-off — balloon only the KCs and attach their own measurements — our escapes dropped fast; caveat: plan an extra 15–20 minutes at first, @thomas61.
We get new folks defense-ready with a 10-piece capability run on the first-off and a quick whiteboard Xbar–R; if KCs don’t hit Cpk ≥1.33, we tweak before releasing to production. @MartaC also does a 10‑minute “ITAR/DFARS 101” and a red‑tag walk to catch no‑phone/no‑camera zones — saves those awkward “uh, put that away” moments; starter link: https://www.pmddtc.state.gov/.
